Montevago
Città delle Terme
Founded in 1636 by Don Rutilio Xirotta and later expanded by Cardinal Pietro Gravina, Prince of Montevago, Archbishop of Palermo, the town grew and developed until 15 January 1968, the date of its destruction by the earthquake. Today the new centre of Montevago, entirely rebuilt, is modern, large and airy, and the numerous contemporary works of art scattered throughout the urban fabric demonstrate the firm will of the Belice people to react to that dramatic event. The monumental ruins of the old town remain, however, a surprising place, frozen in time: worth visiting are the imposing remains of the Mother Church dedicated to SS. Peter and Paul, whose square today hosts numerous cultural events. Of certain interest are the archaeological sites of the Caliàta district, where an ancient Muslim farmhouse once stood, and of the Mastro Agostino district, where you can admire the remains of a Roman rustic villa dating back to the 2nd century BC.
The uncontaminated nature that surrounds Montevago, of which the naturalistic area of the Magaggiaro forest is an element of great charm, is the backdrop to the “Acqua Pia” spa, with its pools of hot water that flow directly from the source, to combine well-being and leisure in a synthesis of pleasant relaxation.
